At WorkSafeBC, we believe in our responsibility to contribute back to the community, and do so in a variety of ways.
We're committed to transforming societal attitudes in order to show that work-related injury, illness, and death are neither inevitable nor acceptable parts of doing business.
To get this message out, we attend trade shows, job fairs, and safety events, and participate in parades where our mascot, WorkSafe Sam, reaches out to children, young workers, and the community at large.
We are also committed to changing societal behaviours around safety; the Raise Your Hand campaign, for example, informs young workers of their right and responsibility to ask questions about job safety.
Our staff charity group, Helping Hands, raises money for a variety of local and international charities (BC Children's Hospital, Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation, CIBC Run for the Cure, BC Foundation for Prostate Disease, and others) through such programs as payroll-deduction and fundraising campaigns. Many other events are initiated by Helping Hands members, and funds raised are designated to charities with the greatest need.
In order to maintain an accident-free workplace, employees are provided with many resources to help them stay safe at work, including an on-site nurse and ergonomist (Richmond location), regular safety meetings, and an organization-wide commitment that puts the safety and health of staff first.
We strive to create a culture that respects and celebrates diversity, both in terms of our uniqueness as individuals and our sense of belonging within a group. The Joint Diversity Committee works to promote a respectful and inclusive workplace for all.
We're also proud of our partnerships with the Greater Vancouver Business Leadership Network and Workable Solutions (linking disabled individuals with job opportunities).
We help our staff make better environmental choices by encouraging and supporting carpooling, recycling, and participation in the annual Commuter Challenge.
As a certified Go Green organization, we aim to protect the environment by reducing waste, improving energy and water efficiency, and supporting a healthier work environment. We also recently won the BOMA BC Earth Award, which recognizes one building in the province for being environmentally friendly and efficient. As a BC Hydro Power Smart Leader, we've adopted efficiency practices to manage energy in a more sustainable way, since 1989.
