Medical And Return-to-Work Planning (MARP) Assessment

The Medical And Return-to-Work Planning (MARP) Assessment program focuses on providing diagnostic clarification, establishing appropriate treatment options, and making return-to-work recommendations to injured workers. The service is offered by Physicians who have a Diploma in Sports Medicine or a specialty in Occupational Medicine.

Description of services

MARP services are designed to achieve early diagnostic closure, and to assist in establishing the appropriate treatment and return-to-work recommendations for workers with outstanding medical issues and/or barriers to return-to-work.

There are four options offered:

  • MARP Assessment
  • MARP Subsequent Visits
  • MARP Reassessment
  • Injections

The MARP Assessment consists of:

  • A medical assessment consisting of a history and medical examination to provide diagnostic clarification, and treatment recommendations;
  • A psychosocial screen.

The MARP Subsequent Visits may be used to:

  • Review the results of diagnostic or therapeutic tests and/or procedures following the initial MARP Assessment or MARP Reassessment or;
  • As a forum for a medical and return-to-work update on the specific area of injury for the injured worker with protracted recovery periods, where the diagnosis has been established.
  • The injured worker can attend up to nine MARP Subsequent Visits within the 12 months following the date of the initial MARP Assessment or Reassessment
  • MARP Subsequent Visits can be performed in-person or over the phone
  • The MARP Subsequent Visits need to be conducted by the same Physician who conducted the original MARP Assessment or MARP Reassessment

The MARP Re-assessment consists of:

  • A medical re-assessment to review the diagnosis and/or treatment recommendations for a worker who had been discharged from MARP Assessment and requires further evaluation, due to failure to progress with treatment recommendations
  • The MARP Reassessment needs to be conducted by the same Physician who conducted the original MARP Assessment.

Injections:

  • Burse, tendon sheath, periarticular or joint injections may be performed as part of any of the above three services by the MARP Physician, where clinically indicated.

Exclusion criteria

The MARP Assessment is not appropriate for the worker who:

  • Has previously attended a MARP Assessment for the same injury and/or body part less than one (1) year ago; or
  • Is currently enrolled in the ASTD Program, OR2, the Pain Management Program, Head Injury Assessment and Treatment Services, or Amputee Multidisciplinary Program.

The MARP Subsequent Visits are not appropriate for the worker who:

  • Is currently enrolled in the MARP Assessment or Re-assessment component, the ASTD program, OR2, the Pain Management Program, Head Injury Assessment and Treatment Services, or Amputee Multidisciplinary Program.

The MARP Re-assessment component is not appropriate for the worker who:

  • Is currently enrolled in the MARP Assessment component, the ASTD Program, OR2, the Pain Management Program, Head Injury Assessment and Treatment Services or Amputee Multidisciplinary Program.

Service locations

MARP is offered at WorkSafeBC-approved clinics throughout B.C.

Referral process

Workers are referred to the program by a WorkSafeBC officer. A written medical referral from a WorkSafeBC Medical Advisor is required for all MARP Services.
