CRA Business Number

WorkSafeBC and the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) have agreed to share certain client information in a program designed to make it easier for businesses to deal with provincial government agencies and departments.

As part of the agreement, all employers registered with WorkSafeBC are assigned a Business Number by the CRA, if they don't already have one. Employers will then be able to use their Business Number for their dealings with WorkSafeBC and the CRA. Of course, they can continue to use their WorkSafeBC account number with us, if they wish.

We'll be providing the CRA with the names, addresses and telephone numbers of B.C. businesses, so that Business Numbers can be assigned. No confidential information about client accounts will be shared with the CRA and any information that is provided satisfies the privacy requirements of federal and provincial legislation.

The partnership is linked to the Single Business Number initiative — a service which cuts red tape for B.C. employers who must deal with several different public agencies. The new service simplifies the process of doing business in B.C. by eliminating the need to register the same information with several different public agencies.

The Single Business Number initiative uses the CRA Business Number because of its widespread use across B.C., and provides access to a range of public agency services — online, in person or over the phone. You can use your Business Number with WorkSafeBC and the CRA, and, eventually, with most other provincial departments and agencies.
